Coriolis mass flow measurement – TRICOR

KEM Logo Pantone

Coriolis mass flow meters provide a highly accurate and reliable solution for direct measurement of mass flow, density, and temperature in marine applications. On board ships, they enable precise monitoring of fuel consumption, bunkering operations, and process media—independent of pressure and temperature variations.

Thanks to their robust design and high measurement accuracy, Coriolis sensors are ideally suited for demanding offshore environments. They play a key role in optimizing vessel performance, ensuring compliance with emission regulations, and improving overall energy efficiency.

Accurate fuel tracking solutions to support sustainable and cost-effective vessel operations

The mass flow meters of the CLASSIC series (TCM) from the manufacturer KEM are based on the Coriolis principle, which occurs in rotating systems involving moving masses.

The parallel measuring tubes of the TCM Coriolis sensors are set into a defined oscillation electromechanically. In a no-flow state, the tubes oscillate symmetrically, and the sensors mounted at the inlet and outlet produce signals that are in phase.

When a medium flows through the measuring tubes, the Coriolis effect causes a twisting of the oscillating tubes. This twisting results in a measurable phase shift between the sensor signals, which is proportional to the mass flow and is used directly to determine the mass flow rate.

Additionally, the natural frequency of the tube oscillation is utilized to determine the density of the medium. An integrated temperature sensor captures the medium temperature to enable compensation and enhance measurement accuracy.

Based on the measured density, a volumetric flow rate can be calculated from the mass flow; in many applications, this serves as an alternative process variable.

The CLASSIC series meets general industrial requirements and is easy to handle. With its cost-effectiveness and focused specifications, it caters to a broad spectrum of applications. This product line is typically deployed in the fields of painting, coating, and dosing involving non-corrosive liquids that require an accuracy of 0.1% and demand little to no maintenance.
